MOVEit Vulnerability Results in Wilton Reassurance Data Breach Investigation

The MOVEit data breach has impacted another major company, Wilton Reassurance Life Company of New York, also known as “Wilton Re.” On 22 June 2023, the company filed a data breach notification with the Attorney General of Maine, confirming a major leak of confidential consumer information. This notification is the leading source on the recent Wilton Re data breach investigation, stating that more than 1.4 million customers have had their names and Social Security numbers leaked.

If you’re a Wilson Reassurance customer, you may receive a data breach letter from the company itself. However, you might also receive a letter from PBI Research Services, the third-party vendor that experienced the breach, or Progress Software, LLC, the MOVEit developer. In any event, you should read the letter carefully and opt into the Kroll identity theft protection services being offered. Timeline of the Wilton Reassurance Breach

According to the filing with the Attorney General of Maine, the breach occurred on May 31st due to a day-zero vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer tool. This is already known from the other, related data breaches, and it’s also known that Progress Software sealed the vulnerability quickly with a patch. However, it wasn’t immediately apparent how many people had had their data stolen or how many companies.

Wilton Reassurance learned of the breach on 7 June 2023 and began an internal investigation to uncover the scope of the data theft. Within two weeks, the company discovered that hackers had been able to steal 1,482,490 matching pairs of names and Social Security numbers.

By then, Wilton Re and the third parties involved in the breach have begun sending data breach notification letters to victims. These detail the stolen data and offer a year of identity monitoring and protection services that affected customers can opt into. You should immediately opt into the service if you receive a data breach letter. It will reduce your short-term risk of identity theft, and it won’t hurt your chances of seeking compensation in court.
