The Cause of the Hub International Limited Data Breach
For now, the main source of information on the breach is Hub International Limited’s report to the Attorney General of Maine. While more details should come out in time, what we know now is that the breach occurred over seven months ago.
The story of the HUB data breach investigation goes back to late 2022. Between December of that year and January 2023, an unauthorized party was able to access internal systems and copy files from them. The company finally detected this suspicious activity on January 17, 2023, at which point it isolated the systems in question and began the HUB data breach investigation.
A review of the compromised files began, aiming to find the types of data stolen and the scale of the breach. The conclusions revealed a serious breach, with more than 479k victims and leaks including Social Security numbers. SSNs were not the only information leaked, though. Other types of leaked information include:
? Names
? Financial account information
? Driver’s license number
The information varies from person to person, but this is cleared up in individual data breach notifications. On August 11, 2023, the same day that Hub International filed the notice with the Attorney General of Maine, it sent out data breach notification letters. If you receive such a letter, read it closely and keep it for future reference. Reach out to your banks and change the financial information on any compromised accounts. Likewise, if your SSN has been stolen you should reach out to the major credit bureaus and put out a credit freeze to prevent anyone from opening fraudulent lines of credit.
