Biography

Katy Mickelson, J.D., is a partner in Matrimonial and Family Law Group of Beermann Pritikin Mirabelli Swerdlove LLP, the largest Family Law and Business law firm in Illinois. Ms. Mickelson counsels clients on the various aspects of dissolution of marriage and paternity proceedings, including child custody, support, visitation, property division, financial issues related to divorce, post-dissolution matters, prenuptial and post-nuptial agreements and civil litigation related to orders of protection. Ms. Mickelson serves the legal needs of all types of clients, from stay-at-home mothers to high profile clients who require the utmost attention and confidentiality, on a myriad of issues from complex financial matters to high conflict parenting disputes.

Ms. Mickelson’s trial experience is extensive, however when costly litigation can be avoided, she will draw on her experience as a certified mediator to settle cases efficiently and expeditiously. Ms. Mickelson is known for her practical and forthright approach and she ensures that each case is treated individually for its unique challenges and issues.

Prior to working at Beermann Law, Ms. Mickelson gained experience as a clerk for the Criminal Appeals Division of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and added international legal skills while working for the Beijing, China law firm Zhonglun W&D Law Firm in its intellectual property department.

Ms. Mickelson received her Juris Doctorate from the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2005, where she was named to the Dean’s List. While at Chicago-Kent, Ms. Mickelson became a certified mediator through the Center for Conflict Resolution and received certificates in both Chicago-Kent’s Litigation & Alternative Dispute Resolution program and Tulane University/Siena Institute of European Legal Studies’ European Union, Comparative & International Law program. Ms. Mickelson also served as Associate Editor of Chicago-Kent Intellectual Property Law Journal. Ms. Mickelson was admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 2005 and to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 2006.

Ms. Mickelson graduated from the University of Michigan in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, with Honors. Prior to embarking in a career in law, Ms. Mickelson was employed in the public relations industry for seven years, managing the complex communications needs of many nationally recognized consumer products and services companies.

Ms. Mickelson is an active member of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois and has continued to serve as co-chair of the organization’s widely praised domestic relations roundtable committee with the Honorable Jeanne M. Reynolds, with whom she has annually moderated the event that includes the participation of more than 20 family law jurists from Cook, Lake and DuPage Counties. Ms. Mickelson was former President of the Associate Board of CARPLS Legal Aid, a Chicago-based legal assistance foundation and contributes a significant amount of her time to Make-A-Wish Illinois. Ms. Mickelson has participated as a panel speaker and lectured for Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education programs, including its Family Law Webinar Series and Divorce Bootcamp. In 2012, Ms. Mickelson was appointed to serve on the Judicial Evaluation Committee of the Chicago Bar Association, which determines the qualifications of standing and prospective jurors.

In 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, Ms. Mickelson was named a Rising Star by Super Lawyers Magazine, a designation reserved for the top 2.5% of all Illinois attorneys under 40. In 2012, she was recognized as one of the Law Bulletin Publishing Company’s 40 Under 40 Illinois Attorneys to Watch, a peer-nominated award. In addition, Ms. Mickelson has been named as a Leading Lawyer for both 2015, 2016 and 2017.
