Legal Questions

Do I qualify for political asylum for purposes of filing a petition?

I'm 23 years old and I'm from Venezuela. I arrived in USA with a tourist visa that ended on 4th of February. I was a university student but I had to retire from my third year of dentistry because of the constant problems university has. I left Venezuela in June 2016 and spent 45 days in Argentina before entering the USA. The situation in Venezuela is becoming more and more difficult (political persecution, violence, lack of food and medicine, suspension of elections, censorship of the media) and I am afraid to return, so I have decided to ask for political asylum and I need assistance from attorney. What do I need to do to do this? Do I qualify?

Good Afternoon, Without more information, it will be hard for any attorney to determine if you qualify for asylum. Asylum applications are dependent on each individual's circumstances. As such, an attorney would need to know more about you to determine your eligibility. If you are interested in exploring the application further, you should reach out to attorneys and schedule a consultation. I would recommend doing this as soon as possible, because your asylum application needs to be filed within one year of your last entry into the United States.
